Many of the city's best hotels lie in the very heart of Rome, around 30 km / 19 miles to the north-east of Fiumicino / Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO). A range of reasonably priced hotels are located close to the Termini train station, being clustered along the Via Principe Amedeo and the Via Magenta, amongst other streets. However, the cheapest accommodation in this part of Rome can be particularly uninviting, so be sure to choose carefully.
The summer season in Rome is always busy and whilst there is plenty of lodging to go round, the best accommodation is often fully booked, making advance reservations worthwhile. A large number of popular hotels are located close to the acclaimed Spanish Steps, around the Piazza di Spagna, over the river in nearby Prati, and lining many of the streets in the Trastevere neighbourhood. The majority of the hotels in these areas are just a short walk from top restaurants and cultural attractions, including those around the Vatican city.
